A Clear, Unbiased Guide to our Lubricants

A Clear, Unbiased Guide to our Lubricants

Lubricant concentrates have become increasingly popular because they offer flexibility, long shelf life, and the ability to customise texture. But not all concentrates are the same. Powdered lubricants behave very differently from oil‑based concentrates, and each brand has its own characteristics.

This guide explains the facts, the chemistry, and the practical differences between the main lubricant concentrates we stock: XLube, Fuck & Fist Powder, and Amsterdam Professional’s oil‑based lubricants. Our goal is simple: give customers clear, honest information so they can choose what suits them best.

What Powdered Lubes Actually Are

Powdered lubricants are made from water‑absorbing polymers. When mixed with water, these polymers hydrate and swell to form a gel.

The final texture depends on:

  • polymer type

  • polymer chain length (molecular weight)

  • water temperature

  • water hardness (minerals)

  • mixing method

Manufacturers do not disclose their exact polymer grades or CAS numbers — this is normal and not a red flag. It simply means each brand behaves slightly differently.

1. XLube — A Balanced, Medium‑Weight Powdered Lube

What it is

A long‑established powdered lubricant made from a proprietary polymer blend. Designed to create a smooth, medium‑thick gel.

How it mixes

  • Hydrates fairly quickly

  • Works best with warm water

  • Can clump if mixed with cold or hard water

  • Reaches full thickness after 5–10 minutes

Texture

  • Smooth, slippery gel

  • Medium thickness

  • Easy to adjust by adding more powder or water

Best for

  • Users who want a familiar, balanced gel

  • People who prefer a medium‑weight texture

2. Fuck & Fist Powder — A Dense, High‑Viscosity Gel Concentrate

What it is

Fuck & Fist Powder is formulated to create a very thick, high‑viscosity gel. It is a concentrated polymer powder designed for users who prefer a heavier, more substantial texture.

How it mixes

  • Thickens more slowly than lighter powders

  • Performs best with warm water

  • Requires thorough stirring or shaking

  • Reaches full thickness after resting

Because the polymer blend is heavier, it is more sensitive to water hardness and temperature.

Texture

  • Very thick, cushiony gel

  • More body and resistance

  • Stays in place longer

  • Can be diluted for a lighter consistency

Best for

  • Users who want a dense, structured gel

  • People who prefer a product that remains stable during use

Shelf Life of Powdered Lubes

Powdered lubricants are anhydrous (contain no water), so they are naturally long‑lasting.

Unopened shelf life:

2–3 years (24–36 months)

After opening:

12 months is standard, as exposure to moisture and air slowly degrades the powder.

Once mixed with water:

  • Use within 24–48 hours if stored in the fridge

  • Use within 12 hours at room temperature

  • Discard if the mixture changes smell, colour, or texture

Important:

For best results, mix with bottled or distilled water. Warm water produces the smoothest, most consistent gel.

This avoids issues caused by minerals and chlorine in tap water.

3. Amsterdam Professional — Oil‑Based, Natural‑Ingredient Lubricants (NOT powders)

Amsterdam Professional does not make powdered lubricants. Their products are oil‑based, cosmetic‑grade lubricants made from natural ingredients such as:

  • Laureth‑9 (Polidocanol) — a soothing, anti‑itch cosmetic ingredient

  • Clove oil (Eugenol) — mild warming and numbing properties

  • Ylang ylang essential oil — aromatic, relaxing

  • Unrefined shea butter — moisturising

  • Marigold (calendula) extract — skin‑soothing

What they are

  • Oil‑based lubricants with a unique, buttery consistency

  • Become liquid at body temperature

  • Contain no water, so no preservatives are needed

  • Do not contain lidocaine or benzocaine

How they behave

  • Solid or semi‑solid at room temperature

  • Melt into a smooth oil when warmed

  • May separate naturally due to essential oils (normal for unrefined ingredients)

  • Require shaking before use

Texture

  • Soft, creamy, moisturising

  • More like a body butter than a gel

  • Not water‑based and not mixable with water

Best for

  • Users who prefer natural, plant‑based ingredients

  • Those who want a moisturising, oil‑rich feel

  • People who want a product that melts with body heat

Shelf life

Oil‑based products typically last:

  • 24–36 months unopened
  • 12 months after opening

Keep away from heat and sunlight to prevent oxidation.
